A to Z Tour at the University of Pittsburgh Hillman Library

Join Green Building Alliance and University of Pittsburgh for a tour of the newly completed and LEED Platinum-certified Hillman Library.

This stunning project recently marked the completion of a four-phase renovation that began in 2017. Located on Schenley Drive in the heart of Pitt’s main campus, the University of Pittsburgh Hillman Library boasts new efficient lighting, windows, insulation, mechanical systems and 133.7 kW rooftop solar array.

The building also features bird-safe glass, green roof patios, and rainwater collection, and brings nature, sunlight, and natural materials inside with elements of biophilic design.

The Hillman Library also achieved an impressive 87% waste diversion through recycling and material salvage during the course of the project.

As the newest of 20 LEED certified (or better) new constructions and major renovations in the University’s portfolio, this project is not only a significant demonstration of energy efficient and people-centered design, but also reflects the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to incorporating sustainability across the board as part of the Pitt Sustainability Master Plan.

Key partners include GBBN (Architect), Gateway Engineers (Civil Engineer), CJL Engineering (Mechanical Engineer), PJ Dick (Construction Manager), evolve environment::architecture (LEED Consultant), and EIS (Solar Installer).

Participants Will

1. Receive an overview of the four-phase project from start to finish

2. Gain insight into the building’s energy efficient and sustainable design, achieving LEED Platinum with a total score of 87 points

 3. Hear from project team members and learn about the various roles involved in the success of the Hillman Library “reinvention” as part of the Pitt Sustainability Master Plan

4. Accelerate to Zero: Discuss how the project aligns with University of Pittsburgh as well as Pittsburgh 2030 District and Resilient Community goals.
