Allegheny County, Pennsylvania
A model of sustainable, adaptive, mixed-use redevelopment that repurposes an iconic Pittsburgh terminal building while honoring its rich history.
Located along the Monongahela River directly across from downtown Pittsburgh, The Highline, formerly known as the Pittsburgh Terminal Property, provides a visually stunning setting, combining elements of the region’s industrial past, with rustic green spaces, panoramic views, and a modern take on urban design. Designed in 1898 and once considered the largest, most efficient cargo warehouse between New York City and Chicago, this historic terminal has been converted by its owners, McKnight Realty, into a model of sustainable, adaptive, mixed-use redevelopment, reclaiming and repurposing an iconic Pittsburgh building in a way that honors and celebrates past history. The Terminal Building at The Highline was recently awarded LEED Certified status for Core & Shell and Building and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Aptly named after the High Line in New York City, The Highline features a 500-foot-long elevated green park-like space running between two renovated terminals. The green space, complete with lighting, planters, and seating, extends to an overhang with gorgeous views of the Monongahela River and City of Pittsburgh.
