Accelerating to Zero (A to Z) Tour at the East Liberty Fire Station

In an effort to meet the City of Pittsburgh’s 2030 Climate Action Plan goals, the East Liberty Fire Station building has undergone major renovations adhering to Pittsburgh’s Net Zero Ready code. In addition to meeting Net Zero Ready and Passive House standards that will modernize the building, strategies such as biophilic and trauma-informed design were implemented to meet and protect the wellness of the firefighters who will reside there.

Join Green Building Alliance, Passive House PA, and the City of Pittsburgh for a look into the background and history of the project, a glance at past and anticipated performance, and a tour of the facility.

Improvements to upgrade the building while preserving historic value and architectural features include a renovation and repurposing of the historic courtroom. The project also includes upgrades to the ambulance bays, community/training areas, decontamination room, fitness center, and wellness rooms, as well as changes to the living quarters.

For security reasons, photography will be limited to select areas.

Participants Will

  1. Receive an overview of the East Liberty Fire Station renovation scope, design process, and decision-making

  2. Gain insight into the building’s energy efficient and sustainable design, targeting Passive House standards (not certification)

  3. Learn about the various roles involved in the East Liberty Fire Station and other City of Pittsburgh Public Safety building projects

  4. Hear from project team members about the challenges and successes of the project

  5. Accelerate to Zero: Discuss how the project aligns with Pittsburgh 2030 District and Resilient Community energy, water, and decarbonization goals.
