Our Mission & Vision

We positively transform the world through the built environment to create a sustainable, healthy, resilient, and economically prosperous future for everyone.

Founded in 1993, GBA is an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and one of the oldest regional green building organizations in the United States. As Greater Pittsburgh’s authority on high-performance, energy efficient, sustainable design, GBA drives the market for healthy communities and strong economies while equipping designers, manufacturers, developers, contractors, and policymakers to catalyze systemic change in the way we design, build, and renovate our buildings.

People remain our primary lever of action. GBA proudly serves Pittsburgh and the 26 counties of Western Pennsylvania, while also working with stakeholders across the Mid-Atlantic, United States, and the world. GBA partners with organizations across Western Pennsylvania and internationally, with strategic alliances including the 2030 District Network, Architecture 2030, the United Nations, and International Living Future Institute.

Vision

GBA’s vision is that every building and community is healthy, efficient, resilient, and sustainable so that people and the economy can thrive.

At GBA, we work with businesses, schools, and entire communities to create spaces that are energy and water efficient, beautiful, and as healthy for people as they are for the environment. We champion cutting-edge research while equipping practitioners to design, power, and operate the most advanced buildings in the world.  Our aim is to definitively transform how we plan and build buildings and communities, from materials and structure to the plans and policies that set new standards for the future.
