First Passive House EnerPHit Plus office building in North America.

Project Description

In 2019, West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund purchased a vacant and decaying mid-block commercial building on US Route 6 in Kane, Pa, a rural community. Built over a century ago, this building was renovated and reborn as the first Passive House EnerPHit Plus office building in North America. In keeping with their mission, the project not only demonstrated Passive House strategies but also incorporated training the local workforce in the methods necessary to achieve Certification. Delivering the five principles of Passive House – airtightness, insulation, high performance windows, thermal bridge free design and energy recovery ventilation – were a challenge to deliver in a renovation project. Sustainable elements incorporated included: highly efficient insulation, windows, and cladding systems; mechanical systems – heat pump for heating and cooling; LED lighting; and Energy Star rated appliances. Solar panels produce 47,547 kWh/yr. of on-site renewable energy.
