Thelma Lovette YMCA

Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

Named for a neighborhood icon, the LEED Silver-certified Thelma Lovette YMCA is a beacon of beauty, health, community, education and sustainability.

Project Description

Located at the heart of Pittsburgh’s Hill District, this institution contributes to the regeneration of an historic, national center for African American culture. This full-service Y includes a gym, a running track, a swimming pool, wellness spaces, community rooms, child-watch areas, locker rooms, administrative offices and a roof garden – all carefully planned to engage its steeply sloping urban context by connecting to sidewalks at multiple levels.

The dominant architectural feature of this LEED NC Silver accredited facility is a transparent façade that enhances the building’s energy performance while connecting its interior activities to the life of the street. Significant and innovative green features include: underground storm water retention system under the green space near the front entrance; rooftop gardens; rain water retention system; energy recovery units added to the RTU’s Air to air heat exchanger to the mechanical equipment; waterless urinals in men’s shower area; vegetative screen wall on the western side of the building.
