Green Building Walking Tour
The Pittsburgh region is home to some of the greenest buildings in the world, and several green building firsts, demonstrating more than three decades of leadership in developing healthy and high performing spaces for people to live, work, learn, play and convene.
Welcome to Pittsburgh: A Leader in Green Buildings
We hope you enjoy exploring our city!
What is a Green Building?
Green buildings use fewer resources during design and construction, prioritize the health of occupants and community members, and make efficient use of energy and water during the life of the building. Systems thinking and integrative design are core principles of green buildings, which seek to include all stakeholders in the development process. Green buildings are durable, long-lasting, comfortable, and resilient. They are beneficial for human health, climate, social equity, and the economy!
Why are Buildings Important to the Clean Energy Transition?
Buildings account for nearly 40% of energy use and 70% of electricity in the United States, so the built environment plays a critical role in the transition to a cleaner energy future. This begins with reducing energy demand through thoughtful design, construction, and operations; using energy-efficient systems; and incorporating renewable energy solutions like solar-powered electricity. The built environment presents enormous opportunities for the clean energy transition, both through new construction and the renovation of existing buildings.
